Umoja African Dance and Drumming
Umoja is a group of talented of young people who dance and drum to the beats of Africa, fostering an interest and appreciation for the cultural heritage of African-Americans. Traveling throughout New York State and locally, Umoja performs wearing the traditional dress of the African people. Through their dances and drumming, they exhibit the creativity and spirit that make the African and African-American cultures so rich. Through African dance and drumming, children (and the group as a whole) serve as role models and cultural ambassadors.
Umoja is unique in that it stresses family participation during Saturday rehearsals; parents and siblings are encouraged to learn along side the children, further promoting Umoja's message of unity and teamwork. The group performs approximately fifteen times each year and performing opportunities are available.
Classes are open to all children ages 6-17 and no experience is necessary. Umoja practices during school year, meeting every Saturday, 11:30am to 1:00pm at Hamilton Hill Arts Center. The Umoja dancing and drumming season starts in September, but new students are welcome at any time. Registration is required and the fee is as follows: $5 per child / $10 per adult / $25 for the whole family.
Adults are not permitted to participate, unless accompanied by their child/children. From time to time, adult African dance classes are offered at Hamilton Hill Arts Center. Please call for the next scheduled course.
Umoja is available for corporate and private events, as well as for school and other educational institutes. For more information, please call 518.346.1262.
